The building’s history and unusual design are what drew us here, and I’m glad we chose it. We slept really well for all three nights, thanks to the excellent bed and linens. Our room was lovely, with thoughtful extras like chocolates, mandarins and a toiletry box. Breakfast each morning had a nice mix of buffet and made-to-order options. The hotel is beautiful, the staff were outstanding, and transit nearby made it easy to get around the city. Don’t miss having a drink on the roof at night.

We stayed three nights at The Murray over Christmas 2025, our first time there, and it made for a memorable visit. Beata was kind and friendly when we checked in and out. Our N2 room was spacious, elegant and beautifully furnished, and it all felt sleek, clean and nearly new. Housekeeping was excellent. We also slept extremely well, especially with the memory foam pillows, and the shower had very strong pressure. Breakfast had a great range and good quality, with the option to order main courses from the menu. The breakfast team were friendly too. The location worked well for getting to the Christmas and New Year lighting shows in Charter Garden. I’d have a hard time picking out a problem with the stay.

The building’s past is part of what makes The Murray interesting. Architect Ron Phillips designed it as a Hong Kong government office tower for civil servants. Its double-height arches and deeply recessed, offset windows gave the modest structure a striking look while helping shield the inside from the heat. Foster + Partners later adapted it into a luxury boutique hotel, and you can still appreciate the architecture without staying there at Popinjays, the rooftop restaurant and bar. Inside, the hotel feels polished, with attentive staff and dining options across several levels. Its downtown location makes the city’s best-known sights easy to reach, and the rooftop bar stands out for its broad skyline views. The interiors and service are sophisticated, and the hotel offers a very luxurious stay.

There isn’t a huge amount to do right around the hotel beyond the Peak Tram, though taxis were easy to find and some fun spots were only a five-minute drive away. Inside, the rooms were beautifully designed and had amazing views. The staff were lovely, and little touches like chocolates and local fruit were much appreciated. I also liked the more sustainable choices, including toothpaste in metal tubes and keeping it separate from the toothbrushes so a brush isn’t wasted just for the toothpaste. The bath came with salts, and the soaps felt very luxurious.

The gym felt smaller than I expected for a hotel of this level. It works for a basic workout, but I can see it feeling limited when busy. The rest of our stay at The Murray combined the old building’s character with modern comforts, and there were thoughtful touches for children too, including a special amenities kit. We had an N2 room with plenty of space, a proper desk area and a fully stocked minibar, which is less common than it used to be. The bathroom had a large soaking tub, quality amenities and a heated toilet seat like you find in premium hotels in Japan. The lobby’s high ceilings and polished finishes make the luxury feel apparent as soon as you arrive. This is one of Hong Kong’s top-end hotels, and one of its most expensive. The repurposed former government office has a distinctive facade and window pattern that blends its heritage with a more modern style.
