Kusalo Guesthouse

We really appreciated how flexible the owners were. They even saved us a parking spot nearby for when we arrived. The place was clean and well located, close enough to walk to the old town, and the pool was a lovely way to unwind after a long day exploring.

The location has its upside: Kuala sits between the old town and the bus station, though a little off to the side, so walking works if you don't mind it. I didn't think it was good value. The room felt dated and cluttered with assorted furniture, and it was only sort of clean. The shower curtain was tiny and flimsy, more like a scene from Psycho, and there was a faint sewage smell in the bathroom.

The family who run it were friendly, and the air conditioning kept the room cool. The guest rooms are hidden up a driveway and some stairs, so finding the room and parking can take a little help. There's a supermarket parking lot nearby where you can leave the car and walk up. We enjoyed a couple of tucked-away rocky beaches about 15 minutes away, and Dubrovnik's old town is roughly a 20-30 minute walk.

I only stayed because my travel agent had prepaid without checking the place properly, and I wouldn't choose it again. It's at least a 20-minute walk from the old city. The rooms are small but have kitchen amenities, and the property consists of several little studios around a small pool with very little privacy. Whether it's quiet depends on the other guests. The owner seems to rent to groups who can take over the guest house, and late-night partying with no thought for others can mean little peace. It felt like hostel conditions, so I wouldn't recommend it to an older solo traveler unless they're prepared for that.
