The hotel sits on a big, leafy property that feels calm even though it’s in town. Its old mansion character, art, historical pieces, and little seating spots make it a lovely place to wander. Everything looked carefully maintained, right down to staff raking up leaves early in the morning. The pool was very clean, and the covered terrace around part of the reception and restaurant building had fans, plenty of chairs, and a nice place for a quiet drink or conversation. I could walk to the downtown plaza and cathedral, or in the other direction to Marche Artisanal for souvenirs and then the restaurants along the seaside boulevard. Gourde and U.S. dollars were accepted at the market. The front desk and other staff were friendly and eager to help, though most spoke Creole and French. My four-day, three-night stay at Hotel Roi Christophe was a real pleasure. My room was clean, with strong hot water and good amenities. Lights and fans worked throughout the day, while room AC ran in the evening and morning, about 7pm to 6:30am. I was fine with that, and I think most or all hotels in the city use similar generators and hours. I barely saw any insects, though that could depend on when you visit, so bring bug repellent if you want.

The lush garden around the hotel is beautiful, and the colonial-style building is nicely decorated with art and lovely views to enjoy during the day. I personally found the room a little creepy at night. The breakfast wasn’t very good, and with so many people coming and going for events and conferences, the place didn’t feel very secure. It’s beside the seafront walkway, with restaurants easy to reach.

An authentic room in a lovely historic building, with a bar, restaurant, and pool. It’s between the center and the beach, so everything was easy to reach on foot.

The staff were warm and polite, and the location near the boulevard is handy. That’s why I’m giving one star, because the condition of the place was otherwise unacceptable. My room was in poor shape, with worn, outdated furniture, unclean sheets, and several things that didn’t work. Maintenance is lacking, and the whole property needs a major update. The amenities were disappointing too. We only got one towel per day, and even though there was a full menu, only two items were actually available. It felt like cutting costs and maximizing profit mattered more than giving guests a comfortable stay.

The location is good, but the place needs upgrading. If your flight is late, they won’t let you check out late unless you pay $25. After 2 pm, they charge you the full room price.
