Pension Óvári

The apartment was spacious, fully equipped and had a big balcony. The kitchen had all the appliances, and the rooms looked like the photos. But this was my worst accommodation experience so far. We were a group of friends. They had booked two rooms, and we separately booked an apartment for two people. Seven of us arrived together. Two days before leaving, we'd called the lady who runs the place, and she reassured us the booking was fine and they'd be expecting us. At check-in, she said she only had a booking for five and couldn't give us a room. I tried to explain our separate apartment reservation and the phone call, but she insisted there was no booking for me. I hadn't even had a chance to give my name, in case she might recognize it. After a long argument, the reservation book came out, and of course our booking was in it. We had to pay when we arrived. Because of the host's inflexibility and the lack of information, on the first night we gathered in one of the rooms and were told off for the noise. The walls are paper thin, though the host had said the apartment wouldn't disturb anyone. So the next night we played cards there as agreed. The host came in WITHOUT KNOCKING and threatened to call the police. We'd booked two nights. On departure day, at 09:58, he gave me the bill and said we had to be out by 10:00 or he'd charge for the extra minutes. We handed over the key at 10:00. In his hurry, he tossed the shoes we'd left inside to our friend waiting in the hallway, who also had a booking for that night. As we were leaving, he pointed his finger at us in the courtyard in front of guests who were just arriving. Humiliating. I wouldn't recommend it at all for people around our age, about 30.

It's a nice, clean guesthouse and the owner is kind. Still, over our ten-day stay, our things were put away several times. The last straw was finding our phone, camera and tablet chargers stuffed into a beer carton by the door. My family and I have stayed in lots of places, but nobody has rummaged through and packed our belongings like this before.

The guesthouse is behind a gate, with its own garden. It's a good deal for the price. The center is a bit far, though there's an ATM, shops and restaurants just around the corner. You'll need transport to get to Dovetsi's shop and the spa.

This time, by the second day, we were already unhappy. We got the feeling that the "Czech" euro counts for less than the German euro. The owners come into the cleaning room, which is part of our room, regularly, on average twice each morning while we're getting dressed. When German visitors arrived in the apartment next door, most of the dishes we'd been using vanished. We wash our dishes when we arrive, but now there's just one shallow plate and a couple of snack plates, not much to eat from. Last year things were fine, and despite the owner's frequent visits and rearranging things in the apartment to suit her own idea of where they belonged, we were generally satisfied. The setting was nice, the rooms fairly clean and the equipment fairly average. We've been coming to Hungary for about ten years for the different spas, and have liked the accommodation and people. This place has changed that. We recommended the guesthouse to two people this year, but won't recommend it again. We'll look for somewhere else for the rest of this holiday or next year.
