There’s no bar, so nowhere to get a drink in the afternoon or evening 🍷. The people are lovely and seem to be doing their best, but this is a massive grand hotel that feels like a reminder of better days, which makes it less appealing. I imagine it’s hard to maintain when it isn’t being used much, a vicious circle.

I can't understand Grand Mutiara's high rating, unless it was from the 1970s. The room was in bad shape, with wallpaper coming loose, no hairdryer, and everything very old and needing replacement or upgrades. We were lucky to stay just one night before heading to Medan. I won't return.

The mountain and greenery views are always a highlight, and the pool is amazing. I first stayed at Grand Mutiara Berastagi as a kid, and I'm glad the quality is still great. The rooms are spacious, with large, comfortable bathrooms. It's a perfect place to relax, and still one of my go-to spots whenever I visit Berastagi.

One nice extra is being able to see the alpacas for free in the garden behind the hotel. It's also not far from Berastagi's biggest market. The room had a vintage, classic feel, and breakfast offered plenty of choices, though no dessert.

The breakfast menu listed American, continental, or Asian, but we only got Asian food, with a cup of coffee and a piece of chocolate cake. At dinner, the beef hotplate was very tough. They offered something else, but their system apparently wouldn't let them take the cost off our bill. It must have been a 5* hotel once, but sadly it's well past its prime. The room was large and the bed comfortable, though it needs refurbishment. The carpet needs stretching to remove the creases.
