In Calm Hostel Canggu

We checked out several days early after finding a snake in the room. The place was generally dirty and poorly maintained, with weak water pressure, little hot water, and a broken toilet seat. Staff didn’t respond, and when we sent the owner suggestions for improvement, the reply was dismissive and careless. The list of problems is long. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place.

The outside area is pretty small, especially if everyone wants to sit by the pool at once. The staff were friendly, but there were some grumpy feelings coming from the other side of the accommodation. Rooms cost about $50 a night, including a very basic breakfast that got boring if you ate it every day, eggs and toast with something on the side. The rooms are simply designed bungalows, with friendly bugs and nothing special. We stayed 8 nights in total. It felt expensive and overrated.

The best parts for me were the beautiful pool facing the rice fields and the open living room connected to the kitchen. Each morning they served a delicious a la carte breakfast with fresh coffee. Anom always made us a yummy breakfast and presented it so nicely. We had a great weekend getaway. The five beautiful bungalows show real attention to detail. Our room was clean, full of natural light, and had all the amenities we needed, plus a nice little terrace and semi-open bathroom. We’ll be back for sure!

The people working there were exceptionally friendly, and I liked having proper coffee from a machine and proper tea. The breakfast was more Westernized than at the usual Balinese hotels and guest houses. I enjoyed it, though after a few days I missed a traditional Balinese breakfast. Everything is new, and the interior and exterior details, colors and decor all feel considered. The pool view looks out over rice fields. The pool isn’t huge, but it’s very deep. We didn’t mind the roughly 15-minute drive from the main Canggu area. Soundproofing could be better. You can hear what's happening in other rooms and outside, including nature sounds like roosters and pigs at 5am.
