The rooms are the highlight at Theodor Hotel: modern, stylish, comfortable, and full of beautiful views. I slept well, and the setting feels peaceful and easygoing. It’s about 8km from Labuan Bajo town, or a 20 minute trip. The staff were always ready to help. When I pointed out the dirty pool, they had it cleaned almost immediately, which says a lot about how responsive they are. Getting there is a different story. The road to the hotel is absolutely horrendous, and it’s baffling that such a basic part of the stay hasn’t been fixed. Coming and going by bike or car was rough and felt out of place for a hotel of this quality. The room looked lovely, though the TV didn’t work during our stay. We didn’t mind much since we were out exploring. There was no hairdryer, another simple thing that would improve the experience. The menu was short and leaned toward mild Western food, without the usual local herbs and spices in dishes such as nasi goreng and mie goreng. If you like bold local flavours, you might find it underwhelming. Still, with the gorgeous rooms, friendly service, and great atmosphere, I’d happily stay again. Just be prepared for the access road and limited food options.

We had a really enjoyable stay. It was so peaceful, with incredible views, clean rooms, a nice little restaurant, and very nice staff.

The room was comfortable and well kept, with amazing views, and we loved the location. There was a cute cat that welcomed us at the cafe every time we went. The access road is a mostly broken stretch of about 500m, so take it cautiously. Food was okay, though it could be better.

Our three-night stay was okay, though the hotel is run down and overpriced for what it is, and doesn’t look like the advertised pictures. The real trouble came on our last morning at checkout. The hotel manager was, in my experience, the rudest man I’ve met, and threatened us. I’ve never had a staff member act with such aggression and intimidation anywhere I’ve stayed. We had seen similar accounts from other reviewers, and his treatment of customers paying the high prices was disgraceful. There was a misunderstanding because we thought we could pay for the scooter rental by card. He said he knew who we were and where we lived, and would track us down if anything was wrong with the room, even though we had left it immaculate. He also made extremely creepy comments that he had been in our room every day since we arrived, despite our “Do not Disturb” sign being on the door for two days. It made us very uncomfortable. The payment was easily sorted: we got 100k in cash to him to cover the scooter in full. We fully intended to pay after he wouldn’t accept our card, but he seemed to jump straight to threats and aggression over a simple mix-up. There were also hundreds of flies in the “infinity pool.” I’d avoid it to avoid getting sick, as there was no water filtration and the water was completely still and filthy. The whole hotel needs a revamp, and most of all a new receptionist or bell boy who doesn’t threaten genuine customers over his own lack of communication.

Pictures don’t do the views justice. Theodor Hotel is a quiet, peaceful gem, with scenery so stunning you could keep looking at it. My room was spacious, spotless, and comfortable, and the staff were all friendly and helpful. The restaurant was simple and okay. The whole place has a calm charm that made me feel at ease. If you want an unhurried stay in Labuan Bajo with lovely views, I’d happily come back.
