Komodo Garden Bungalow

Avoid this place. After a long, exhausting trip from Lombok, we checked in and were shown to a room that looked fine at first. We checked the bed before unpacking, as we always do, and found it full of bed bugs. We took our unopened luggage out right away and told the person in charge. He didn’t seem surprised, which made us think he may have already known. He asked us to show him, and we did. We said we couldn’t stay and asked for a refund through Agoda. He said he’d help. Getting the refund was even worse. He repeatedly claimed he had submitted the documents Agoda needed and showed us fake screenshots as proof. We were still on the island, so we went back to check in person. He only sent the documents ten minutes before we arrived. If we hadn’t kept insisting, we probably wouldn’t have got our money back. The whole thing wasted precious time and left us with a terrible impression. Thankfully, we found a much better hotel. I’d avoid this place until they deal with the bed bug problem and treat guests honestly.

The staff were so kind, and the resort was beautiful and clean, with good linen. I spent too long in the sun and they noticed, so a gentleman cut some Aloe Vera from the gardens for my sunburn. The breakfast was wonderful, especially the omelette. It’s close to beach clubs and tourist attractions, and having the pool right there was handy on a hot, humid night. I’ll definitely go back.

The location is great, with Sunset Beach a few minutes away on foot and Dream Beach about five minutes in the other direction. The cottages are nicely decorated and have a huge bed, plus a desk and chair. The outdoor bathroom is spacious and pleasant, though it could use some attention. The pool is a decent size, with a few loungers and plenty of seating around it and in the bar and restaurant area. That area is smaller than the photos suggest. I mostly had good service. To be fair, I was awkward about changing my plans, and they were willing to arrange activities. But they stuck to a short list of partner companies rather than using their local knowledge to suggest beyond it. I’m not sure those companies were the best. I had an amazing experience with another boat operator for better value. Breakfast was disappointing, especially compared with most places in Bali. You can choose eggs or banana pancakes, both with fruit, and I preferred the pancakes. It’s a decent place to stay, and a few small improvements would make a real difference.

The huts are well placed near Sandy Bay restaurants, handy if you don’t ride a scooter. The staff were great, especially the guy in the hat who checked us in and explained everything, sorry we forgot his name. Our room was clean and comfortable, with a fridge and an outdoor bathroom. The pool was lovely. It’s fairly small, but with only eight huts that wasn’t an issue. A few things weren’t so good. We asked for oat or soya milk at breakfast because of a milk intolerance. The server checked with the manager, who said he couldn’t provide it because it wouldn’t be fair to the other guests. That felt like poor customer service, so we bought oat milk at the shop next door. Breakfast itself was simple, with just a few basic choices. The bungalow walls don’t block much sound, so bring earplugs. We could hear the people next door talking. We also had lizards and mice visit; we didn’t mind, though some people might. The fridge leaked and made a loud noise at night, so it needs fixing. Our double/king bed was two singles pushed together, with a very hard mattress, which some people may like. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend the bungalows. Good value for money.
