Merbabu Guesthouse

The main drawback was that the bathrooms could’ve been cleaned better. Otherwise, I had a good stay at Merbabu Guest House: spacious rooms, a really comfortable bed, and delicious breakfast included. A solid option in Malang.

We had about 25 people together for New Year's Eve 2023, so my extended family booked every room and added a few extra beds. The affordable room and food prices were a nice bonus, and the staff were very helpful and friendly. It’s close to Ijen Boulevard, a Malang landmark, so the children could walk there on New Year's Eve to watch the fireworks. There was room for all of us to relax, talk, and play board games in the living room and dining area beside a pond. The bedrooms and bathrooms were very clean. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for budget accommodation with excellent service.

This guest house has been in its third generation of family ownership. Before arriving, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the antique door knobs, locks, windows, and other details caught me by surprise. After staying a few days, it felt homely. The breakfasts tasted homemade, with a different personal size meal served each day.

Breakfast was a highlight. We could choose what we wanted for the next morning, and both my omelette on morning 1 and chicken sate on morning 2 were delicious. The guest house also offers fine handicrafts made from fine plastics. The room we’re staying in is spacious, clean, and neat. It has good air-conditioning, a well-equipped bathroom, television, a sofa chair with an antique table, a large wardrobe, and a work table and chair. The place is in the center of town, with fresh air around it. It’s an old house that’s been renovated successfully, keeping its ancient style while adding modern equipment.
