Gumaya Tower Hotel Semarang

The room safe in my room didn’t work, and the ventilation was odd. Even though I booked a non-smoking room, I could smell kretek smoke coming through the vents into both the room and bathroom. The spa only offers body and head massages now, with no facial treatments like it had several years ago. On the plus side, it’s an American-style hotel in a handy spot near the city center. The rooms are spacious and quiet, there’s a large gym and a pool big enough for laps, about 20m. Several restaurants in the building serve local and Western dishes, and the laundry service is convenient.

I was here on a business trip, and everything felt professional. The quiet, comfortable room had a useful work area, which helped me stay productive. Staff were efficient and responsive, as you’d expect at a five-star hotel. Breakfast was nicely laid out, and the restaurant had a comfortable atmosphere. Vanesa was especially polite and helpful. Those simple, sincere interactions made the trip more enjoyable.

The breakfast really stood out. I was surprised to find every stall’s food delicious, with authentic gudeg, very nice lumpia and ikan bandeng, warm soto ayam semarang, plus homemade jamu and juices. Usually hotel food can be too salty, bland, or just bleh, but this felt like visiting separate restaurants for traditional dishes. I’ve stayed at a lot of hotels over the past few years, and Gumaya met a good standard in most areas. I loved every part of it.

The breakfast buffet has a wide selection of local food, though most of it was very oily, and the limited Western options were cold. Vita at reception was friendly and helpful. Noise and uneven floors were real issues for me. Families of local tourists can be loud, and live music during school or festive holidays made it hard to sleep. For light sleepers, those periods are best avoided. The hotel looks new but is actually a refurbished older property, and the soundproofing and bedroom floor leveling seem to have been overlooked. Even a “5-star” hotel can’t escape the noise.
