Alam Sari Homestays

The rooms were clean, the bed was comfortable, and it was very quiet. Breakfast was simple but good, just fruit, toast, and eggs. The on-site driver was great for recommendations and more reliable than Gojek. It cost a little more, but I thought it was a good deal if you negotiated the price first. This isn’t a fancy resort, it has more of a tucked-away-in-the-jungle feel. The hill means there are lots of steps to reach the top. Its location works well for south Ubud, the Rice Terrace, waterfalls, and the monkey forest. Some facilities have closed permanently, apparently after the hotel struggled to stay open since COVID. Even so, the staff were amazing, kind, and helpful, and I felt well looked after. I had a great stay.

The rooms were clean, the chlorine-free pool was well kept, and the free walk around the terraces and village was great. Food made with organic produce from the hotel’s own garden tasted good, though it was overpriced. A few breakfast choices were good, but things like the fruit salad came in a tiny portion. Every option included huge croissants, plus plenty of coffee or tea in a pot. There’s a free shuttle to Ubud three times daily and free water refills. Beautiful place, nice staff.

We had the pool almost to ourselves, and the stay felt like a welcome change from the bustle of Kuta and Ubud. The road is nearby and there are lots of steps, but the outlook is beautiful. We stayed three nights with friends and our five children, ages 2 to 10. The airy little villas feel very Bali, and the food was tasty and fairly priced, with options for our fussy eaters. I especially recommend the village tour through the rice paddy terraces, which ended at a local art school. The artisan’s work was intricate and detailed. The staff were excellent, and it was a lovely place to stay.

Putu offers a free walk through the nearby jungle and rice paddies, and explains the plants they harvest. If you’re into that kind of thing, it’s really interesting. We spent three days at the Alam Sari with my partner and had a very enjoyable time. Everyone on staff was friendly and accommodating. Our room was clean and well kept, with a safety deposit box and a very cool bathroom. There’s no television.
