The balcony view was the one good thing about this run-down place. The houses badly need general maintenance. Replacing towels, filling bottles, and making the bed isn't enough. Everything was dirty and needs serious cleaning, even with bleach and abrasive products. Power wash it. There's no charm in dirt. I asked reception to stop the lawnmower running right outside my house so I could enjoy a quiet morning. They stopped it and said they'd run it while I was out in the afternoon, but the next morning it was roaring again. The maintenance staff seemed to assume I should be up and gone by 10 AM. If they're landscaping, they should plan around guests instead of renting out rooms where the work is happening. Afternoon would be a better time, when many visitors have checked out or gone to lunch. Moving guests to other rooms for a day shouldn't hurt a half-empty resort, but annoying customers will.

The reception attendant who checked me in guided me well, and I do appreciate that. The rest of the stay was very disappointing. The property was old and didn't look like the photos, and my room was 300 metres from reception. At checkout, they held me up until I paid extra charges for small things, including a very dirty bedsheet. My flight was delayed, so I also paid IDR 200,000. The restaurant service was very bad, and the pool water wasn't clean. I felt the hotel was a waste of money and wouldn't recommend it.

The pool was beautiful and peaceful, surrounded by plants, and the staff were genuinely kind. They brought takeaway to our room by buggy one night and helped carry our luggage there, which was thoughtful. The location was good too. Those things earn the three stars. The room was quite far from reception. They said buggy service was available, but one night it was being charged and the next morning it was being serviced, so we had to walk. That's not a huge deal, just annoying. We were also woken before 8 one morning by a call from reception, then housekeeping kept knocking before 9 to ask if they could clean. Cleanliness was the main problem. I wiped the sink with a dry tissue, and the photo shows what came off. The ceiling was covered in mould, and I didn't feel clean there overall. I still wouldn't recommend the place.

The rice terrace view from our cottage was beautiful, but the noise made it impossible to stay. Roosters started up at 4 a.m., and on Saturday and Sunday they mowed the lawn right below our windows at 9 a.m. It was really loud and unpleasant. Why not schedule that for lunchtime, when guests are out? If you're hoping to sleep, this is a terrible hotel.

The staff made this stay for me. They were friendly, always smiling, and quick to help over WhatsApp. The room phone didn't work, but WhatsApp did, and my room stayed clean, tidy, and felt safe. WiFi was strong too. Agung Raka Hotel is huge and beautiful, with spectacular views, refreshing pools, and a relaxed atmosphere. You even need a buggy to get to your room. I came here after paying twice as much per night at Sanubari Hotel, and taking a chance despite the negative reviews turned out to be my best decision. I told the conference organizer this place was worth much more than the price. Six stars out of five from me. Thanks to the lovely staff for making the stay unforgettable. I'd recommend it to anyone visiting Bali. -Dr. Antonio Ramirez
