My driver kindly waited with me while I booked another place, then made sure I got there safely. That same night I went to Arya Wellness, where everyone was so kind. Thanks to Koman’s awful behavior, I ended up enjoying my stay elsewhere. On arrival, I asked about other negative reviews mentioning dorm locks because I had valuables, gadgets, and a work laptop. Instead of reassuring me or addressing the concern, Koman was rude and unkind. I was also having severe period cramps and couldn’t carry my 25 kg suitcase up the stairs. He said it wasn’t a 5-star hotel, but that doesn’t excuse acting aggressively. His attitude was nothing like the friendly Balinese people I’ve met. Bupu and Agus tried to help, but Koman kept interfering and made things worse. He showed no interest in fixing the problem, while speaking as if he were the manager, though he was staff and on “duty”. It was unprofessional. My concerns weren’t received with any grace, registration became impossible, and the welcome was poor. There was no hospitality or basic courtesy. I wouldn’t recommend staying here based on that first impression or the treatment I received.
I left as soon as I could. During my stay at Puji Bungalows, the Wi-Fi failed on most floors, the pillows were moldy, and the doors wouldn’t close properly. I also found bedbugs. Other reviews described the same problems and said staff often ignored reports about cleanliness and bedbugs. The staff I met were kind, but those conditions were unacceptable.
The pool looks nice, and the hostel is down a charming Ubud alley. Service was great, but the facilities need more upkeep: some curtains were broken, a few mattresses sagged, and the water pressure was really low. Dog lovers get a bonus, there are two dogs, a Pomeranian and a husky!
I liked the feel of this place, including the Ganesh statue at the entrance and the regular cultural flower offerings by the staff. I stayed in a shared dorm set up like a mini bungalow with a pleasant front porch, facing a landscaped common area and decent pool. It was social enough, without being a party hostel, which suits Ubud. The dorm wasn’t the best, but it was good value at under $10 a night in Bali.
I can’t speak to the dorms, since I had a private room. The location is very central, but the room was poor and unpleasant to stay in. I also left some things behind at checkout, medical toothpaste and a toothbrush, and when I returned the next day they were gone. I wouldn’t recommend it if comfort and attentiveness matter to you.
