Sayong House

The guesthouse was lovely, tucked somewhere peaceful but close to everything. The staff were helpful and always smiling. We had a little trouble with the water pressure in the shower, and the wifi cut out now and then, which is why I'd take off half a star. Still, I'd recommend it.

The location was the only thing I liked. The room felt unclean, the bed was damp and uncomfortable, and the old bathroom had a strong, unpleasant smell. It didn't seem well maintained. Internet was the worst part. The Wi-Fi barely worked and was basically unusable, so this isn't a good choice if you need to get online for work or travel. Noise came through badly from both the hallway and the next room, leaving no peace or privacy. There were gaps under the door that let insects in too. There isn't an elevator, so hauling heavy luggage upstairs was a hassle. Booking here just for the location was a regret, and unless things improve, I won't return.

We had breakfast included, which was a nice extra. The room was simple, but had what we needed for days spent out exploring and coming back for a quick swim to cool off. The pool is fantastic, really big and lovely to swim in. The guest house is right in the heart of Ubud, convenient for walking to lots of places, and the staff were friendly.

The people were nice, but the location didn't work for me, tucked into a narrow back alley. The bathrooms are very dated and need work, and both the AC and wifi were terrible compared with many other hostels and hotels in SE Asia. I was still sweating at night even sleeping on top of the sheets. In this humidity, I really wanted some relief in the evenings. Don't go too cheap, there's a healthy balance.
