Tegal Panggung Guest House

I’m writing for our group after booking two rooms. The standard room was very cozy, with a regular bathtub and high ceiling, and I’d definitely come back for it. The larger executive room had much more space, but felt a little eerie to us. Its bedsheets were old school but clean, and the toilet was massive with a cool bathtub. The location is just off the main stretch of malioboro. There’s a lovely dining area where you can use the plates and top up your water, though since it’s a guesthouse, you should clean up after yourself. There isn’t much food immediately nearby.

I liked the traditional decor and the big room in this nice house. The street noise was too loud for me to sleep well, and breakfast was the main reason for the low rating. The tables hadn’t been cleaned, there was no water refill for making hot tea, and although I saw juice glasses on the table, we never got any. There was nothing for western tastes, not even a boiled or scrambled egg. The staff seemed to be doing their jobs without much interest.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and the place was clean, with nice teakwood furnishings and western-style bathrooms. The rooms are good for the price. There’s some street noise and the water pressure is low, as others have mentioned, but the location is great, close to the action on a relatively clean and quiet street. Breakfast was enough to get us going.

I wanted to like this place, but we ran into one problem after another. The room I’d booked with one bed wasn’t available. The room we moved into the next night did have one bed, but its door lock kept jamming, so the following night we had to move again. Then the shower stopped working. They fixed it, but it broke the next day and had to be fixed again. The walls between rooms are very thin, with gaps at the corners. You can feel it if a neighbor leans against the wall while you’re in bed. Thankfully ours weren’t too rowdy, but that could be really awkward.
