The refurbishment looks lovely. We had piping hot food that was freshly cooked, and the menu had interesting choices. The waitress impressed us by remembering every order from our large table without writing anything down.

The staff are great, and the rooms are basic but decent, with good, comfortable beds. They were clean for the most part. Just know what you’re getting: it’s a pub and nightclub with rooms, not really a hotel. On a weekend, forget sleeping before 3am. The rooms are directly above the nightclub, and it’s very loud, not just a bit. If you want a cheap place to sleep, a good spot to get pissed and stay up until 3am, it might suit you. For a luxury room and a quiet early night at the weekend, look elsewhere. The food was really bad. The common areas are very 80s and rundown.

Friday night karaoke came booming through the floor and walls. Maybe that’s fun in the bar, but it wasn’t enjoyable from our hotel room. The bar itself was beautiful, but the stay wasn’t. The front desk lady was nice, and the room was clean with new carpet. It took forever to get hot water, though.

I love the place and the food, but every weekend I come in, it feels like a teenage disco. They only ID people at 11pm, and it’s a joke. All the 15 year olds get ID’d more than the 18+ and 21+.

Calling this a 'royal hotel' couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s a shabby pub with a disco that stays open until 02.40 in the night. Hotel guests can’t sleep before 02.40.
