Monk's bar and restaurant is only a few metres away, and the food is top class. At weekends there’s live music in the evening. Two shops, Centra and the petrol station shop, plus the post office, are just a two-minute walk away. Ballyvaughan is a lovely little village to stay in. We rented the cottages for a surprise birthday weekend with friends. Claire was lovely when we met her and left plenty of towels for our 12 smelly kayakers. The thatched roofs look great, and inside there’s a traditional feel, with limewashed walls and a huge fireplace with antique cooking racks. The bedrooms were very comfortable. Each cottage has two downstairs rooms with en-suite bathrooms, plus a large bathroom upstairs. There’s also a big conservatory sunroom at the back and a large kitchen with a washing machine, dryer, cooker, fridge, large freezer and dishwasher. Perfect holiday cottages.

We enjoyed exploring County Clare, but our five days in cottage No4 were a real letdown. We paid €850, or €170 a night, and expected the standard shown in the photos. Instead, the lounge furniture was worn, dated and unclean. The couch fabric took me back to my childhood, and the cushions looked ready for the bin. The scratched dining table and dirty placemats put me off eating there. The family bathroom shower wasn’t up to standard. When I turned it on, black bits of dirt came out from the lower tiles. The mirror was rusted, and at night there were lots of black things crawling on the floor. The towels were heavily used too. In the bedroom, the linen was poor quality, the duvet cover was worn and had no fastening at the end, and the colours were a mishmash. For that price, I think it’s fair to expect a matching level of quality and service. On this occasion, I felt ripped off. Thankfully, the restaurants we visited during our stay all had very high standards of food and service.

Right in the centre of Ballyvaughan, with secure private parking, these large, well-kept cottages have everything a family needs for self-catering. They’re a great base for visiting the Burren. The famous Dolmen and Aillwee Caves are both about a 15-minute drive away. I’d definitely recommend them.
