Ashlin House

At checkout, another team member was helpful and kept our backpacks until 5pm, though they were left beside the desk where anyone could take them. Getting here from the centre is an easy short walk, but the person at check-in was unwelcoming, so don’t count on a warm greeting. Our room was a decent size and clean. The shower pressure was low, and the mattress was so poor we could feel the springs digging into our backs. We weren't expecting the Ritz from student accommodation, but these seem like easy fixes. I’m surprised this place has 4+ stars.

I know the other student places rented as hotel rooms because I’ve stayed at Ashlin, Broga, and Coleman, and Ashlin was by far the worst. The kitchen was filthy and had almost no utensils, dishes, or anything else. There wasn’t even soap for washing the dirty dishes. On the morning I was due to check out, more than an hour before I had to leave, a woman walked into my room with a man while I was undressed. She said, “Oh sorry love, I just was showing him the rooms.” The room was occupied by a woman on her own. Front desk staff were brusque too. When I tried to complain at checkout, the woman at the desk just gestured and said “leave the key,” then walked off before I could speak. Truly astonishing treatment. I absolutely wouldn’t recommend this for a short stay.

The shared kitchens and hallways are far below acceptable standards, and the ovens are disgusting. From my first day, the shared kitchen had no pots, cups, cutlery, or even dishwashing liquid. I reported it right away and was told these things would be provided, but nothing has arrived. It’s disappointing to see such basic needs overlooked in a residence meant for long stays. The staff have shown little willingness to help or deal with the problems guests report. There seems to be very little care or attention in the service.

The room was really comfortable and clean, and it exceeded my expectations. Our roommates were friendly.
