The building is a beautiful Victorian place with period details, and the entrance foyer feels stylish and welcoming. Reception greeted us warmly before we went up to our club room. The bed was comfortable, with good pillows and lovely linen. It was the hottest day of the year, so it was a big disappointment that this premium room had no air-conditioning. The carpet and chairs were stained and clearly had seen better days. Breakfast had a fair amount of choice, but the display looked quite mean.

I wouldn’t stay at this hotel again, even though I love Cork. The reception staff seemed apathetic, and the bedroom was dark and dated, with an interior mattress on the bed. It felt as if the staff wanted to be anywhere but there. We hadn’t planned to eat at the hotel, but our plans changed. My fish and chips came with undercooked fish, so I sent it back. The replacement had overcooked chips, cold peas, and congealed curry sauce. Staff apologized, but still charged me for a meal that was very poor and that I didn’t eat. The website is glossy, but that’s all. Customers have left poor reviews and get prompt replies saying the feedback will be taken on board, but clearly it hasn’t.

The young man who helped us at breakfast the next morning was the first friendly face we’d seen. I didn’t get his name, but he was welcoming and cheerful. That was the only bright spot in a stay that left us feeling unwelcome, especially as we’d just arrived in Ireland to start our holiday and this was our first stop. For the price and reputation, we expected much more thoughtful service, and left extremely disappointed. The lobby looked clean and modern at first, but the experience went downhill. We arrived about 45 minutes before check-in and were told to wait at the bar. After 15 to 20 minutes without anyone acknowledging us, we had to order ourselves. There were only two other occupied tables, yet our three drinks took another 20 to 25 minutes. Staff walked through without checking on guests, and the service felt disorganized and inattentive. The room seemed fine at first, then we noticed stains on the bed covers, a sink that wouldn’t drain properly, and a broken desk lamp. We’d also booked North for my husband’s birthday and noted the occasion in advance. The hostess checked the reservation device without eye contact, then walked to the table without speaking, so we awkwardly followed. His margarita pizza arrived without basil. When we asked, they said they’d run out, but no one had mentioned that when we ordered. They still served it at full price, offered no fix or alternative, and the manager simply walked away. It was disappointing that nobody told us ahead of time, especially for a birthday dinner. The hotel looks modern and has potential, but the poor communication and inattentive service spoiled the stay.

There was no onsite parking, unfortunately, so some of us were dropped off while the driver parked elsewhere. The area is very hilly, which may be difficult for anyone with limited mobility. We all really enjoyed our meals before going to an evening of music at the Everyman. The setting is pretty, with nice decor, pleasant service, and tasty food. Hats off to the chefs.

It’s a very beautiful, clean, and calm building. Everyone was exceptionally kind, welcoming, and charming, from reception and the manager to the bartender. The cocktails were lovely too. I’ll definitely come back.
