The Residence Hotel

The location and being attached to Fitzgerald's Pub are what kept this place in my good graces. Even with the bars below, the noise through the walls or ventilation was bearable because it died down around 10. The staff were mixed: some were helpful, while others seemed reluctant to do more than collect a check. The room itself was cold because the heater wasn't working, and the bed was awful. It was two twin beds pushed together, and at six feet tall, my feet hung off. I didn't raise these problems at the time, though I probably should have, since we were only there to sleep. I would give the Residence another chance. It has potential to be a solid 4 to 4.5 star hotel with some minor changes, and I could see it reaching five stars in every way if management addressed the issues. The rooms have been renovated nicely, and I was especially impressed with the bathrooms given how old the building is. The common areas still show their age, and I found the artwork a bit odd, though I'm no decor expert. There was some pub noise, but the double windows made it quieter than I'd expected. Our safe was stuck open and took a few requests before someone fixed it. Decent for the price, and the location right in the middle of everything is hard to beat.

The front desk worker was wonderful. Since we were wet and wanted to warm up, she got us into a room early. It was cute and comfortable, and we loved both the location and the bar.

We loved the quirky rooms, and the complimentary bottles of water were a nice extra. The staff were friendly, easy to talk to, and genuinely took time to get to know us. They also had some great local recommendations. The location is right in the middle of the city.
