Glendalough International Youth Hostel

The location is handy for the lake and nearby hikes, but the place felt run-down and far too expensive. We waited a long time with no one at reception, and another guest and I had to ask around and find the receptionist, who was chatting outside. The kitchen was in very poor shape and really dirty. Breakfast at €9 felt like a rip-off. The dorms were very basic, with no bed curtains, awkwardly placed plugs, and a dirty bathroom with a broken lock. Nearly €40 a night is way too much. I’d camp instead; it seems better value.

There were bugs all over my friends' room, and some walls and the bathroom had mold. My own room wasn't as bad, but the sheets were dirty, including one with a period blood stain, and there were nasty black marks on the walls. We were meant to get towels, but there wasn't a single one. When we went to reception to ask, nobody was there to help.

The staff really made the week for me. Aiden and the other workers were so friendly and helpful. I had a great time, and both the hostel and its location are unreal.

We loved our two nights here with the kids. The family room was roomy and warm, and came with a kettle, cups, tea, coffee and milk. Staff were lovely, and the hostel was clean, bright, relaxed and well looked after. The kitchen had everything we needed, from cookers and gas hobs to fridges, a freezer and microwaves. There was a big dining area with a toaster and microwave, plus fridges for our food and drinks. Breakfast is available on site for a small fee, and the price for the stay was very reasonable. The scenery and mountains are beautiful, with walking and hiking trails only a few minutes away; there are maps and information at the hostel, too. We all had a great time and will definitely stay again. I'd recommend it.
