We stayed in 16b, where the house was fresh, clean and nicely furnished. The resort is well kept and feels very safe for children. The beach and busy town centre are both about a seven-minute walk away. A great base in a popular West of Ireland resort on the Wild Atlantic Way.

The houses are clean but basic, and they work well for families who want to relax while the kids play outdoors when the weather’s good. Bad weather brings out the drawbacks: there’s no on-site Internet or WiFi, and the storage heaters make it hard to warm the house efficiently or dry clothes. The electric oven and hob are old-school, and the furniture could be more comfortable.

The grounds were spotless and great for children, with a playground, two tennis courts, a basketball and five-a-side soccer court, a small crazy golf course, and a big open green. Kids can play outside safely away from traffic. Each house has its own wheelie bins, and the beach is only a five-to-ten-minute walk if you don’t have much to carry. The house itself was spotless when we arrived, everything worked and hot water was always available. But check-in is between 4 and 6 on Saturday, and I felt I was putting the caretaker out when I had to call her. For a self-catering place, we also had to buy little things like dish scrubbers and bin bags, so bring those along. The mattresses were rock hard, and we all woke up crippled. The curtains let in so much light at sunrise, and even rolling over made the noisy mattress wake the person beside you. We still really enjoyed our stay in Kilklee.

There’s plenty of space and light in these beautiful houses, and the facilities are brilliant. The only snag was having no place to put rubbish. It’s a great area, with the beach, shops, restaurants and pubs about a ten-minute walk away.
