Grand Hotel

We look forward to our birthday meal here each year, and have always enjoyed it, so this visit was a letdown. The food wasn't at its usual level. The fish seemed to have spent too long under the heat lamp, and came out dry and rubbery instead of fresh and flaky. Hopefully it was just an off day and things get back to the standard we've come to expect. It's a shame, as we love celebrating here.

The hotel is right by the coast for a lovely walk, and the main town, with plenty to offer, is only a couple of minutes away. I prefer staying in Malahide to central Dublin. A taxi takes 20-25 minutes if you want to head in, and the airport is only 12 minutes away. I can't wait to return. It's a gem. I stayed in an Exec Sea View Room. It was dated in a way I liked, with old world charm, but it wasn't faded or in need of an upgrade. The room was elegant and clean, with a very comfortable bed, nice Rituals products in the bathroom, chocolates, water, and a gorgeous corner view of the sea. Staff were wonderful, from the warm welcome at reception to the people in the bars and restaurants. The lobby has a lovely atmosphere, warm colours, and a welcoming feel. It was busy with people having afternoon tea. I was told it had recently been refurbished, and they've done an excellent job. You could happily spend all day there. The Marksman bar is inviting too, with great lighting and atmosphere. I can imagine spending a couple of hours there over cocktails.

There were loads of staff around, and we didn't have to wait or queue for anything, which was a real bonus in a big hotel. Everyone was cheerful, welcoming, and attentive, including the breakfast team and the lovely people at the coffee dock, where we had coffee and scones before leaving. I really didn't want to go! We had a wonderful meal in the bar. The beef melted in your mouth, and breakfast the next morning was amazing, with lots of lovely breads and plenty to choose from. The pool and sauna were spotless, warm, and really nice in February. Hotel pools in Ireland can be quite cool, so that was a treat. Afternoon tea was beautiful too, and Maria, the young waitress, was so helpful and attentive. I'll definitely go back after such a brilliant overnight stay.

We were a group of friends and had a fantastic experience from start to finish. The staff across reception, serving, and cleaning were excellent. Our renovated rooms were beautiful and spotless, with everything we needed. The included three-course meal at Coast restaurant was beautifully presented and tasted excellent. Charly and Matthew at Coast deserve a special mention. Their service was exemplary and a credit to themselves and the hotel.
