Golden Oren Hotel And Spa

I wouldn't spend even 1000 on this hotel. It's perched high up, so the car can't get close, and there are at least 30 more stairs to climb. The room was damp and grimy, with cobwebs. There was no water, so bathing or even using the bathroom wasn't possible. Basic items like a dental kit, shower gel, and shampoo were missing. The Wi-Fi didn't work, which also meant the TV was unusable, and there wasn't a phone in the room to call reception. Breakfast was a bad deal too, just two or three poor items.

The hotel is only a 2-3 minute walk from the Clock tower, Keventers, and Glenary's, and it has a lift, which is a real plus in Darjeeling. The uphill approach includes 40-50 stairs, so I wouldn't suggest it for elderly guests, though younger, fit travelers should manage fine. For a very low price, it’s a good option for budget travelers, with the necessary amenities. I spent four nights in room 501 on the top floor. When the weather cooperates, you can see the full Kanchenjunga range from the bed. The rooms compare well with renowned hotels, the bathroom was very clean, and everything was maintained. There’s a restaurant too, with decent, affordable food.

The rooftop and top floor rooms had incredible views. We had a very good stay, and the staff behaved well. Water was the one problem, but there was a crisis across Darjeeling while we were there. The hotel sits on a steep hillside and takes about 30-40 stairs to reach, so it may not suit older people or anyone who can't manage steps or slopes. Otherwise, I highly recommend it.

The one bright spot was the FNB staff, who were very kind. The rest of the experience was awful. I stayed two nights, but the bathroom amenities and tea supplies were never provided. The bathroom lock was missing or broken, the floor was sticky, and neither room had a tea kettle. When I asked about the TV, the installer came once. The food was poor, especially the mushroom masala and steamed rice. The hotel is also up a very steep flight of stairs. Mr Arvind, the corporate manager, responded very badly. I called and messaged him several times and got no interest or response. At reception, the lady manager offered a very costly tour plan and didn't know the food and beverage plan included a 20% discount. Given Mr.Arvind's lack of responsibility, I don't know what to expect from the rest of the staff. Think twice before booking.
