For ₹200 return, the Sahastradhara Ropeway gives you a quick 5-7 minute ride and a front-row view over the valley, terraced waterfalls, and hills. The views are panoramic, and you can also see damage from the recent cloud burst, a stark reminder of nature’s power and the consequences of encroaching on river banks. It’s not as long as Auli or Mussoorie, but makes a great bonus for a half-day outing when visiting Dehradun’s sulphur springs and natural caves. Sahastradhara means thousand springs. The lower station is small but efficient, with a little parking area, ticket counter, toilet, waiting area, and a small play area for kids. The gondolas are enclosed transparent cabins for 4 or 6 people. Try to get one of the newer all-transparent cabins, since the aluminium grill doors on the old type get in the way of photos. The ride uses 250 kg tare-weight gondolas on a 618 meter rope-line, with capacity for about 500 people an hour. Dev Bhumi Ropeways built it, and it has been running since 2018, powered by a 165 kW motor and geared bullwheel. Our trip uphill stopped midway for 7-8 minutes. I believe there must be an emergency generator for outages, and the pause gave us more time to photograph the valley below. There’s more to do at the upper station, with small amusement-style parks, benches, gardens, swings, animal statues, an artificial waterfall, and kiosks. The landscaped area has several levels and connects to nearby Mussoorie Road, though you can’t continue there from this point at present. If you go up, you have to come back down. It’s a relaxing place for all ages, better for photos and unwinding than adventure. After getting off, I suggest going up first toward the toy-train area, then to Saibaba and the budhdhist temple, and then working back down across the parks and viewpoints. Kids’ play equipment and Kashmiri dress rental for photos cost extra. Without kids or much interest in photography, you might be back in half an hour. Future plans seem to focus on improving facilities at the hilltop, with cafés, viewing decks, better landscaping, eco-friendly amenities, and cultural zones, so people can linger longer. It seems geared toward enhancing the visitor facilities rather than extending the ropeway itself.

The valley views are beautiful, and the garden at the top of the ropeway is a nice touch. It’s an amazing, quaint spot and definitely recommended. Just a heads-up: reaching the ropeway starting point means climbing almost three floors, which may be difficult for elders.

A ropeway return ticket costs ₹200 per person. The place seems mainly for children, with activities for kids; other things cost extra, including ₹100 for a Kashmiri Dress photo. Restaurant, Temple, and the other children’s activities are chargeable too, as shown in the images.

The ropeway ride was good, and there are several places at the upper end to take pictures. There’s a restaurant and attractions for children, including swings. Get your ticket from the window right below the ropeway entrance. Nearby shops may also try to convince you to buy tickets from them.

The ropeway was a great experience. A ticket was ₹200 per person, and at the top there were fun activities, a waterfall, a temple, and a nice view. 🚠⛰️
