We had booked dorms for seven people at Zion Hostel in both Guwahati and Shillong for a Dussehra trip with friends. After detailed conversations with the owner, we paid an advance and received confirmation. Then, just 24 hours before check in, the owner messaged that a government directive supposedly barred dorm bookings because of “political turmoil between Assam and Meghalaya.” Private rooms were apparently still allowed. We checked with several other hostels nearby, and none had heard of such a rule. When we challenged the explanation, the owner stopped answering calls. There was no help, empathy, or alternative arrangement, just a vague promise of a refund. We later called from a different number pretending to be new customers, and were told dorms were available. Suddenly there was no political tension or restriction. Being left stranded at the last minute during a major festival, with seven people, was a nightmare. This felt incredibly unreliable and unprofessional. If you like wondering whether your booking will be canceled, Zion Hostel is for you. Otherwise, avoid it. You deserve peace of mind when you travel.

The girls dorm could use mirrors. Apart from that, I loved staying here and would recommend it to any traveller. I explored the city in a whole new way, met amazing people, and made some great memories. It was a magical way to start the year.

I came for two days and stayed a whole week. The place is neat, cosy, and well maintained, and the host is super friendly and helpful. They can suggest detailed offbeat itineraries that you wouldn’t find on Google. When it rains, sitting outside at the entrance table is a perfect way to relax. Recommended for a peaceful, comfortable stay.

The kitchen is fully equipped and guests get full access, which makes this a great spot for backpackers. The rooms are clean, well ventilated, and have comfortable beds. Owner Joshua is very friendly and a good host. The hostel is also well connected to restaurants and shopping.
