Riding camels into the desert, seeing the sunset, and taking a jeep ride all felt magical. The show was amazing, and so was the food. Sleeping was great too, with the choice of a tent or hut, or out in the desert by a fire with a staff member looking after you.
The welcome at Desert View Resort was warm, the dinner was delicious and generous, and we especially enjoyed the music and dance by local artists. That performance was a real pleasure. Our driver arranged a jeep safari in the Sam Dunes. We knew from the travel guides that the dunes weren’t especially spectacular, but the setting still made sunset special. Sug Singh gave us a wonderful desert experience. First we went on an amazing 4wd trip through the sand dunes, then watched the sunset from a camel ride. Later, we danced to live traditional Indian music and had a great meal. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. Thanks for having us, we’ll be back for another desert adventure.
I had a very bad experience at this resort and wouldn’t recommend it. We booked a three-day, two-night package with the owner, Mr. Sukh singh, including station pickup and drop-off. The facilities were poor for the extra money charged, the food tasted very bad, and the menu was repeated. On the first day, they picked us up at the railway station. The package said we would visit all the local sights that day, but we only saw Jaisalmer Fort and Patwao ki haveli before being driven to the resort in Khuri, about 50 km from Jaisalmer. The driver then said the plan was only those two sights, followed by the resort, camel safari, and jeep safari. We accepted the change, but later that afternoon were told both safaris would be the next day instead. The next day, they planned a trip to Tanot Mata Mandir and Longewala. We missed the sunset and the camel and jeep safaris, which were moved to the following morning. Morning rides weren’t as enjoyable as evening ones. They had said the safaris would take 2-3 hours, but both together lasted only 30 minutes. We were also promised a candlelight dinner on the dunes, but it was served around 10 pm, after we asked about it ten times. The chefs took an hour to pack the food for the dunes. On the last day, they told us to check out, have lunch, then visit the Jaisalmer places missed on day one. We checked out around 12:30 pm and asked them to call the car while we ate. They said it would arrive in ten minutes, but it didn’t. We asked again and were told ten minutes again. After asking around ten times, the car finally came at 3 pm. They then said it would take us to the hotel to leave our luggage, and we’d have to visit the sights in local vehicles. We reminded them the package included a car to every place, so we wouldn’t need local transport. Mr. Sukh singh immediately raised his voice and argued with our family. A woman from another tent came out because her family was also experiencing his rudeness. He then began arguing with her and our family, and got into a scuffle with her. She told her family to leave the tent and not pay him, saying it was wrong for him to scuffle with her. We had been friendly with Mr. Sukh singh and repeatedly asked him to listen, but he rudely said he wouldn’t hear our issue. When we said we would leave if he wouldn’t listen, his staff took our luggage and wouldn’t return it when we asked. Once they realized we were leaving, they took the luggage and kept calling for our car, asking us to let it in. After the scuffle and argument, they forcefully put our luggage in the car. It arrived around 2:30 pm, before the 3 pm arrival they had given us, and Mr. Sukh singh handed it over after another argument. I felt he had intentionally delayed the car. Overall, it was a terrible stay, especially because of Mr. Sukh singh. He was one of the worst people I’ve met, and he also got into a scuffle with a woman.
The host’s warmth made this quiet desert stay even better. The views were beautiful, and the atmosphere felt calm and authentic, away from Jaisalmer’s crowds. A lovely, secluded spot if you want an offbeat getaway.
