Senses Hotel

The main issue during my stay was being put in a lower-grade room than the one I paid for. They said my booked room had sold out, even though the point of booking ahead is to have it reserved. Otherwise, the hotel was good: the rooms were clean and maintained, with basic amenities and other services available on demand and complimentary. The in-house restaurant food was average, but there are plenty of good restaurants and food outlets within 1 km. It’s in Salt Lake City, about a 10-minute walk from the metro station.

The shower’s hot water comes from an individual boiler that you have to switch on each morning, and it runs out after a few minutes. There was dust on many surfaces, mould in the bathroom, and the room smelled musty. Even with the window shut, a gap let in dust, street noise, and smells. The thin walls carried sounds from neighboring rooms and music from a few floors below, and the fridge was loud too. The lobby smelled so strongly of used cooking oil from the adjacent restaurant area that it made me nauseous. It’s a badly maintained hotel, and the list could go on.

I could have found a much better place for less money. The room they gave me was crumbling, and the AC fan was extremely noisy. When I asked them to fix it, they said other guests had complained too, though some didn’t mind. I then asked to switch rooms and was charged an extra 400, which they were very keen to collect right away. “This is not our hotel's policy” seemed to be their standard reply. The hospitality was bad all around, with smells, poor hygiene, and unprofessional staff. It was my first time in Kolkata, and I felt cheated. I suspect most of the Google reviews are paid, so please avoid this place.

I stayed five days on a company-sponsored trip, and I won’t book here again. The rooftop is the only nice place if you want a drink, but you can’t stay long because they close it. Breakfast is served up on the roof in heavy wind every day. Getting around takes three times as long for no reason, with the ring road and one-sided lanes. Inside, rooms are noisy enough to hear neighbors talking, have insecure doors between partitions, and the showers never work properly. There’s no Wi-Fi reach in any room, and a constant disturbing sound starts early in the morning. The reception team is rude whenever you need service. I’ve told my team members about it too. Thanks for the no service.
