The calm, nostalgic atmosphere was my favorite part of Fairlawn Hotel. It felt like a quiet retreat in the middle of a busy city, and the colonial-era architecture and vintage decor give it a character that typical modern hotels don't have. The location is excellent for exploring central Kolkata and nearby attractions. Staff were very courteous and helpful, and the food was quite good, with a decent choice for breakfast and other meals. A few parts could use renovation and modern upgrades since it's an old property, though that aged charm is part of its appeal. A wonderful stay if you enjoy history and warm hospitality. I'd love to visit again.

The room was roomy, comfortable, and quiet, even with the bustle of the New Market area outside. I also loved the hotel, especially its first floor, which feels like a time capsule, and the bar staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant was only average, though. There were some frustrating problems during my two-night stay. My room wasn't cleaned, despite staff being around outside on their phones, and the shower was unusable, which I wouldn't expect at a four-star hotel. I had paid my bill the night before so I could leave early, but was challenged and accused of not paying. I didn't appreciate that. The Elgin Fairlaw is a wonderful hotel, so it's a shame that some parts don't meet four-star standards.

The place itself is fantastic, with excellent food, lovely decor, and a superb location. It's an enjoyable place to spend time with friends or family, and definitely worth a visit. I did notice a gap in the service culture. In places like Thailand, customer-facing staff often greet people warmly and show clear care and attentiveness, which makes a real difference. Kolkata has incredible food, heritage, and character, but I think hospitality here could grow to match global standards. Sometimes service interactions have a classic Bengali snobbishness or indifference, which can unintentionally detract from an otherwise excellent experience. With a more polished, welcoming approach, this place could match the best dining experiences globally.

The food is dependably good, comforting continental fare, and the calm heritage atmosphere is what makes the visit feel like more than just a meal. It's a lovely spot for a quiet lunch or conversation, away from the city's bustle. The vintage furniture and peaceful courtyard add to the refined, colonial-era setting, and stepping inside feels like being transported to old Calcutta. Elgin Fairlawn is a beautiful place to spend a relaxed afternoon. A good fit for anyone after continental food, a heritage setting, or simply somewhere peaceful to unwind.

The meal was memorable, from the carefully prepared, flavorful dishes to their lovely presentation. Service was gracious and attentive, with a nice mix of professionalism and genuine warmth. The regal setting felt like a preserved piece of history, elegant without losing its welcoming feel. I especially suggest the Pork chops in Korean sauce. For dessert, there was a coffee infused cream dessert whose name I forgot, but I still remember the taste. I'd happily return.
