Taj Chia Kutir Resort & Spa Darjeeling

We spent one night here, arriving from Bagdogra around 1:30 PM and checking out at about 11:30 AM the next day. We used the time simply to enjoy the property. The gardens were beautifully maintained, the valley views were lovely, and the accommodation was comfortable, with typical Taj standard. The tea tasting was unforgettable. A senior executive from Makaibari tea estate gave an interactive talk about tea, and I can’t put into words how interesting it was. Afterwards we had excellent high tea, which was chargeable. Later, three monks held a prayer session in the lounge for about 30-40 minutes, and the whole place felt like a Buddha Monastery. We rested a little, then had a superb dinner, especially the lamb preparation, followed by excellent breakfast the next morning. My sincere thanks to everyone who made the stay comfortable and enjoyable and made our meals memorable.

Breakfast was the weak point for us. The spread felt repetitive each day, and the quality was disappointing. The hotel is in the hills, roughly halfway between Bagdogra airport and Darjeeling city, with lovely mountain views. Tea gardens aren’t visible right from the property, though you can walk around the surrounding estate. Our Valley View grade room was at reception level. It matched the standard room for size and amenities, but had a spacious patio about as large as the room. We also enjoyed the cosy bar with live music and the tea tasting. A nice hotel in the Hills.

Arfan kept our rooms neat and clean with excellent housekeeping. Bhaskar and Kumkum gave us a very warm welcome and explained everything nicely. Rohan went out of his way with food, often proactively getting dishes that weren’t even on the menu. He was talented, well spoken, confident, and so attentive that we asked for him at every meal. He and the chef deserve the credit for our 10/10 food experience. Chef Pankaj was courteous and soft spoken, and kept checking how we liked the food. Even with high occupancy and a busy buffet, he made Sel Roti, a local dish, for breakfast. He also offered to mix and make me a special fermented rice dish after seeing I didn’t know the proportions, before I’d even asked. My wife, toddler, and I had an absolutely fantastic 4 night stay at Taj Chia Kutir. The decor, service, food, and housekeeping were all perfect.

The tea and tea culture really stayed with me. I’m a coffee person who loves Long Blacks, but it took 72 hrs to realize I hadn’t ordered even one sip of coffee. I’d thought Darjeeling tea was overhyped until my first taste of Makaibari first flush. Try the Darjeeling first flush, second flush, or silver tea, plucked under a full moon by the light of burning MASHALS. By the time you try to understand it technically, you’re in love. Every sunrise from the balcony felt so pristine, pure, and fragile that I just wanted to sit and watch, hoping the dream wouldn’t fade. The balcony looks out over deep valleys and manicured tea gardens, and that, along with the team’s magical hospitality, is what steals your heart. Service is professional but comes naturally from the heart, like it’s in everyone’s DNA, never forced. My wife and I both felt pampered, respected, and cared for like family, and I even started to feel like royalty. The rooms are as good as any exotic TAJ property. The landscape and roads nearby are hilly and challenging, and rushing along them will take your breath away. That makes F&B the biggest entertainment for most guests. Hands down, the best BF buffet and A La Carta room service. In three nights, not one meal repeated, and each was outright authentic. It’s an impossibly beautiful romantic getaway, among the most beautiful places I’ve seen. During every sunrise and sunset you’ll wonder if it’s real. The nature is pristine and the quiet is absolute, sometimes broken by unknown birds chirping. You may fall in love, perhaps all over again. The roughly 90-minute drive through scenic tea gardens and a few haunted public roads and tea estates brings you to Chia Kutir, where nature and TAJ hospitality embrace you like family. I could go on, but this property deserves a try. Let your heart decide. I know I’ll come back, maybe for the Makaibari tea, the surreal sunrise, or just the smile of security guard Suraj and the Dil-Se service from Kumkum, Kaustabh, or Sousish.
