Madurai Residency

The Madurai Residency, also often searched as Southern Residency because of its spot in the southern part of the main city, makes a convenient base for visiting the temple city. It's within walking distance of the Meenakshi Amman Temple and close to the railway station, so it suits pilgrims, business travelers, or tourists exploring the Athens of the East. After a long day out, it was nice to be able to return to a high-quality room. The hotel also offers a peaceful retreat from the busy streets while capturing something of Madurai's vibrant culture. The Mandapam Restaurant is a major draw. Its view of the Meenakshi Amman Temple's towering Gopurams is astonishing, and especially magical at sunset. The restaurant serves authentic South Indian food, including crisp dosas and traditional Madurai-style curries, as well as Chinese and Continental dishes. The breakfast and lunch buffets are praised for being fresh and including local delicacies that give a true taste of the region. The rooms focus on cleanliness and practical luxury. Coming in from Madurai's heat to the hotel's cool, well-maintained corridors is a relief. Staff get high marks for putting guests first and often going out of their way to help with temple timings or local transportation. If you're looking for a stay that combines closeness to the temple with good food, this is a standout choice.

The extra bed charge was still kept even though we didn't use the bed, which was disappointing. Check-in was another problem: although four people were at reception, nobody took charge of assigning rooms to our group. We'd booked and paid three months ahead, but the rooms weren't ready when we arrived, inconveniencing our guests. For a group of 39, only one housekeeping staff member was available, and no drinking water was offered while we were handling the luggage. This fell well short of what we expected after confirming everything in advance.

The breakfast chef made sure we had everything we wanted, and the food was great. We had three clean rooms for six people, with a nice view that included some monkeys. The staff member looking after us also took good care of my driver. Check-in did start with a bit of a problem, but it was sorted out after a few minutes. The general manager and his staff gave us a very warm welcome, and we had a good stay.

The rooftop restaurant was the best part for us, we really enjoyed dinner there. The hotel is clean and friendly, and you can walk to the temple. Our street-facing room got noisy early, with traffic waking us around 5am. Still, it's a good 3-star option.
