The rooms and interiors were worth about 4.5 stars for the price. The food felt like two stars at that price, though I can see the cost may reflect the convenience: once you're on the boat, it's difficult to step out, so staying in and relaxing is easy enough. We were there the day after the Pahalgam attack, and the staff, including Rayees, seemed very shaken and sad. At first they were urging us to take a shikara or buy clothes, but stopped when we asked them to. They arranged a ride with a very old man who couldn't hear well or understand our language. He took us a long way at a slow pace during the evening. Coming back in the dark felt a bit scary, with only a few shikaras still on the lake. They told us we were lucky because that chacha ji had also worked as a shikara rider in the movie Arzoo.

The food at the houseboat was basic, but it wasn't bad, and there's a lovely Le Delice bakery right opposite ghat no 9. Raees Bhai was warm and hospitable throughout our two-day stay, about two months ago. Altaf boathouse on Dal Lake is beautifully made. The wooden panels are all hand-painted, and Kashmiri crafts fill the boat. I spent the whole stay admiring its atmosphere.

The owner even checked in after I left the city to make sure I'd reached my next stop safely. During my stay, he personally greeted me and came by each night to see if I was comfortable or needed anything. He also sorted out my transport and pointed me toward good local places to visit without me having to ask. That kind of thoughtful, genuine care made me feel like an old friend, not just another guest.

The staff at Houseboat Danish were friendly and ready to help with questions or services, including arranging airport pickup and drop-off. The boat is beautifully decorated with hand-carved walnut wood, and its spot on Dhal lake feels tucked into nature. We had an excellent stay.
