The Ganga view is the big draw here. From room 403, where I stayed for three nights, I loved the view and how close the ghats were, just a 3-minute walk to Dashaswamedh Ghat. I took some of my best photos of the ghats, sunrise, moon rise, and boats from the balcony and adjoining terrace. The restaurant also gives you a view if you don't get a Ganga-facing room. Don't miss the food, especially if you like Chai and Puri Bhaji. The middle-aged man managing the kitchen cooks like a pro and made satisfying food. The restaurant manager was warm and always on his toes. The bathroom had a serious water supply problem and no soap holder, but they sorted those things when I asked. Kamlesh, Pramod, and the other staff are warm people who try to help at any hour. The managers, Abhijeet and Ajay, were helpful and great hosts. There are two real hassles. The hotel entrance is on the roadside, so you have to make your way through narrow, filthy lanes for 8-10 minutes to get there. GPS doesn't work well in Benaras ki Gali, as you might expect. Each time you're out, you need to call staff to come meet you at the main road, though they never complain. Also, there are no ground-floor rooms or lift, only very narrow, steep stairs. The iron staircase to room 403 is hard for older people or anyone with knee problems, and one wrong step on the way up or down could badly hurt you. If those two issues don't put you off, I wouldn't miss booking this place. Go for it and you won't regret it.

You can see the Ganges from the window, and getting help with luggage is possible if you call the hotel staff. You can't reach the hotel by car, but the walk is at most 15 minutes. The hotel is in an old palace, with old-fashioned doors, and the rooms feel a bit below standard, even compared with other Indian hotels I've stayed in. Still, the shower worked perfectly and had hot water, which was important in winter. The staff are kind and always ready to help, so the service is very good. Just remember to ask for bath towels to be changed and for the room to be cleaned, as they don't do those automatically. The rooftop restaurant serves practically any kind of food you prefer, including Indian, Chinese, and continental.

Kamlesh Sharma made my early starts feel safe. I was nervous about walking the dark gullies alone at 4:00 AM, but every day he got up at 4:15 AM and walked me to the main road, staying until I was safely in a rickshaw. The manager had also arranged my airport cab with a stop at Varad Hanumanji Mandir, and a porter met me at Sonarpura for my luggage. I was traveling solo, and the staff made my stay at Dvivedi Hotels Palace on Steps comfortable. The balcony looks out over the Ghat, and the room had fresh linens, a kettle, and hot water around the clock. When I got sick, they brought a heater right away. The home-style food was lovely, especially the Chai. The hotel is right on the Ghats, about five minutes from Dashashwamedh. Cars can't get through the very narrow lanes, so you do have to walk. That’s part of Kashi, though, and I’d stay here again. Har Har Mahadev! 🙏🔱

The terrace and restaurant were highlights, and the food there tasted really good. It’s also right near the ghat. The hotel managers were great at answering questions and guiding us with our Banaras itinerary, and the staff were especially helpful and polite. A really good stay.

The hotel is close to the Ganga, but getting there was a struggle. You have to walk at least 500 metres through very narrow, dirty lanes with stray dogs, cows, and household waste. After that walk, there are no autos or taxis available. There are also a lot of uncomfortable steps to climb inside the hotel and on the way to the ghat, and there’s no elevator. I wouldn’t choose this hotel. I’d stay 2-3 km from the river and the main Kashi Vishwanath temple instead.
