Ankawa Royal Hotel is in a great spot, very close to Central Town Ankawa, and I'd recommend it to friends. The room was spacious, clean, and had the amenities we needed. Breakfast was delicious, with a wide buffet and lots of choices. Management was very friendly, and service was great. The reception staff helped with check-in and check-out, and also gave us directions to places. I'll definitely stay again if I'm back in Ankawa.

The breakfast was amazing, and the rooms were clean and comfortable. Most of the staff spoke English, and everyone I dealt with was receptive and well-mannered. Coming from California and having traveled a lot, I was surprised to find such a good hotel in Erbil. I stayed four days, left for another city, then returned to Ankawa Royal Hotel for another eight days. That second stay was very good too.

The location is the only good thing I can say about this place. The building is old, and workers doing repairs upstairs caused a lot of noise from 8 a.m. Staff weren't professional and didn't speak fluent English. Breakfast was very cheap, and the cook would hide during breakfast time to avoid making eggs for guests. The concierge was helpful, but the reservation staff were rude and unwelcoming. The pool wasn't available because it was being used as a restaurant. Don't choose the corner suite: it's the same as a deluxe room but costs 50% more. This should be a three-star hotel, not five.
