Brekkulækur Guesthouse

The room was cozy, and Mr. Abbie and Ms. Claudia were so welcoming that we felt right at home. That constant summer brightness was a unique experience, too. We did find the lighting could be better, though it was a small issue next to all the good parts. Brekkulaekur Guesthouse is very isolated, which limited how much we could explore nearby. We did make it to Hvammstangi, a beautiful town about a 20 minute drive away. Our stay exceeded expectations, and we'd highly recommend it for a peaceful, memorable visit to Iceland.

The hosts are very welcoming, and the place feels familiar. Rooms are simple but clean, and the location is nice. There's no food service or guest kitchen, but breakfast is included in the accommodation price and is good.

The Aurora was showing nicely from our window, and the heated floors kept the room comfortable. The beds and linens were decent. Breakfast was limited, with no Skyr, though they did give my wife gluten free crackers for her allergy. We stayed one night on the way to Lake Myvatn. The guesthouse is about 10 mins south of the ring road, and the paved road becomes rough gravel/dirt about halfway there. It's rustic, with a horse motif throughout. Leo, the guesthouse' dog, greeted us at the entrance, and the owner was pleasant and chatted with us on arrival. We found it odd that there was no key for our room. We were told that in Iceland we didn't need to worry about locking doors. I trust the Icelanders, but wasn't sure about every traveler, so we took our valuables with us when we left the room. Our room had a private bathroom but no counter space for toiletries. The shower was a hassle: it wouldn't stay at one temperature for more than 30 seconds, there was no bodywash or shampoo, and the curtain let water onto the floor with no bath mat to mop it up. The fan didn't work either, so steam fogged the room windows. There's no TV in the room, and the wifi only works on the main floor, so an evening in your room could get boring. I'm torn about the place. I wanted to like its charm and pleasant owner, but the bathroom and wifi problems make it hard to recommend unless you're really into the farmhouse vibe.

We did an amazing tour around Iceland organized by the guesthouse, starting from there. The food was great tasting and served in big portions. The guesthouse itself is cute, with small wooden rooms and really friendly staff. Bathrooms are shared.
