It’s expensive, but worth every penny. You’re out in real wilderness, so set the GPS location manually and it’s easy to find. From there, you can wake up looking toward Hekla volcano, have a barbecue dinner, soak in the warm jacuzzi, then bundle up beside the small but cozy fireplace. A great base for exploring Iceland’s main sights.

The cabin’s standout feature is the luxurious outdoor hot tub on the property. Inside, there’s a kitchen with a fridge-freezer, eating utensils, and knives, along with a WC, toilet, and shower. We stayed in one of the three cabins at Icestay Cabins, surrounded by beautiful scenery on the Southern Peninsula. The lodges have a typical 'Scandinavian' style, and stepping onto either the upper or lower balcony makes the reason for their location obvious: stunning views stretching for miles.

There are three bedrooms, including one with three beds, and the comfortable kitchen-diner has all the essentials and more. The best part is the relaxing hot tub, which is free to use!

The cabin and its setting were nice, but the stay was a letdown. We had to make the beds ourselves, and a quick look at other Booking.com reviews suggests this has happened to other guests too. I’d have given it four stars if we hadn’t been left to deal with the previous guests’ linen and used towels. The owners said a terrible storm had kept them from getting out there, but they hadn’t been willing to delay our booking because of that same storm, so it shouldn’t have affected our stay. Nice cabin, shame about the experience.

A peaceful, nicely isolated spot with a relaxing hot tub. The views are fantastic and seem to change every minute. Highly recommend.
