Matkráin Apartments

The apartments were clean, lovely, and spacious, with a washer and dryer. We chose one as a private halfway stop on our drive around Iceland. If you’re short on time like we were, I’d avoid the dryer cycle. It locks the door while heating, runs for three hours, and then needs another hour to cool before you can get the laundry out. My first load took over four hours to open and was still very damp, which caused me a lot of stress. I’d use the highest spin setting and then lay the clothes out to dry. There was some confusion about check-in: we didn’t know we had to speak to the restaurant on arrival because the room wasn’t prepaid, despite our understanding when booking. That requirement wasn’t in the booking details or confirmation email, which gave directions to the room. The apartments and restaurant are separate establishments. We were driving around Iceland as tourists and arrived close to 9pm. The restaurant manager went above and beyond by waiting until we returned from a nearby bar at 11pm. At the time, we didn’t know we might have been able to arrange dinner with Matkrain on arrival, since every other place in town had said its kitchen was closed. To be clear, the check-in requirement came from the owner of both the apartments and restaurant, not the manager, who had to follow it.

Just off the main road, this spacious, beautifully decorated place sits right above a restaurant with the same name. It was very clean, and checking in by ourselves was easy with the clear directions.

The retro-cool decor and extra space made it larger than we expected. It was clean and very conveniently located, less than a five-minute walk from the Food Hall and brewery. We recommend both.

Benni was incredibly helpful with our family. He really went out of his way for us!
