Brekkugerdi Guesthouse

It was already upsetting to lose a long-awaited holiday because my airline went bankrupt and cancelled all flights, leaving me unable to travel to Iceland. I know my booking didn’t include free cancellation, but I’d hoped for some understanding given the unusual circumstances. Other places I’d booked accepted my cancellation sympathetically and without any issue. Here, I was just told to “find a way to come anyway.” That was disappointing and unhelpful, especially with a month still to go before the reservation. Losing all the accommodation money on top of the cancelled trip feels deeply unfair.

Haraldur was a wonderful host and made us feel comfortable. He also shared lots of useful, practical tips for exploring the area, and we learned a lot about Iceland’s history and culture from him. There was coffee or tea available, and we could use the kitchen to cook. We really liked the atmosphere of the place and the people. It’s in a handy spot for visiting sights on the Golden Circle and beyond, including the Highlands. Highly recommend!

The rooms are clean and modern, and the owner is friendly. We found the place great to stay in, though the kitchen could use instructions for the induction hob, and the microwave is tucked away and not obvious at all. I was also hoping to see the Northern Lights, weather and activity permitting. The greenhouses in Laugarás create a surprising amount of light pollution, visible for miles, and they’re right by the guesthouse. I was concerned when we arrived and felt discouraged that first day. Luckily, while we were there, we saw amazing activity from the bridge a few minutes away, looking away from the guesthouse and greenhouses.

We felt right at home in this cozy guesthouse. The owner was friendly and hospitable, and the facilities worked well for cooking for ourselves.
