Galaxy Pod Hostel

The pods seemed like a fun option with a bit more privacy than a regular hostel, so we gave them a try. They don’t seem to lock, but I’d still recommend staying for the experience. There were plenty of toilets for the number of guests, and they looked really clean.

For an introvert like me, the pods were great: private when I wanted that, with the chance to socialize too. There was much more room inside than I’d expected, which mattered since I can get claustrophobic. The bathrooms were clean and the shower warm, and the window had a gorgeous view. It’s a bit of a walk to the downtown harbor, but the low cost made that worthwhile for me. I also had fun staying around other travelers. A nice, simple hostel.

The concept is quirky and the location is great, but it didn’t feel as fresh as it did when I visited four years ago. This time it felt more like a hostel. Maybe peak season had something to do with it. The pods no longer lock, the TVs weren’t working properly, and there were no headphones, so I couldn’t use the TV with my wireless headphones. It was fine, just not the amazing stay I remembered.

Everything looked clean and well organized, and the place was easy to find and well placed for pickup from nearby hotels. The pod beds are more comfortable than basic bunks, giving you privacy and some protection from noise, but the plastic feel and loud doors are drawbacks. It’s probably good for a night or two, though a longer stay could get tiring. Storage is tiny, so a big bag won’t fit. There’s a safe in the pod for valuables, but larger backpacks have to be left in the open pod, since it can’t be locked. That means trusting Reykjavik’s reputation with your things.
