101 Guesthouse Hotel

The location is the best part, so close to all the Reykjavik attractions. I booked a double en-suite room despite the mixed reviews and don't regret it at all. It was spacious and clean, with a kettle and mini fridge, and the beds were comfortable enough that we slept really well. I'd definitely stay here again if I return to Reykjavik.

As always, I had a nice stay. The rooms are simple, clean, and nice, and there's a kitchen and dining area too. Check-in and check-out are quick and easy. Reception isn't always staffed, but you can call them 24/7. It's close to Hlemmur Bus Stops and the Food Hall, with a 24-hour market called 10 -11 nearby as well.

If a simple guesthouse is your thing, this might work, but I found plenty to dislike. Check-in was by code with no staff around. The kitchen felt basic and sterile, and I had to use the kitchen to blow-dry my hair. The toilets were okay, and there was a sink in my room. The shower door was broken and clothes were still hanging inside. The beds sagged, the sheets had holes, and I didn't want to inspect them more closely. I also don't like carpet in a room. My first room faced the street and was noisy; the second faced the party strip and wasn't better. On top of that, my two Eastern European neighbors argued loudly all night and locked each other out, then banged on doors and walls. I was traveling alone and didn't feel safe complaining. I'd accidentally booked the last night and asked the host right away, explaining what was going on and hoping for some goodwill, but they wouldn't cancel it. I had to stick it out, then drive 40 minutes to the airport at 3 a.m. I'm a backpacker and can rough it, but there are definitely better places for a restful night.
