The check-in cutoff wasn’t clearly shown in the listing when we booked, and this caused a lot of stress. We were driving from Switzerland at around 10:00 PM and needed a place near Milan for the night. Within two minutes of booking, the owner messaged us on WhatsApp. I gave our ETA, and he said check-in ended at 11:00 PM. I explained we couldn’t drive faster and asked what we could do, but he said there was nothing he could do. Since we couldn’t arrive in time, I asked to cancel just minutes after booking. He stopped replying, ignored our calls, then answered immediately when we called from another number. He refused to cancel, said he had “no interest” in doing so, and hung up. He also demanded a cash deposit in his message, which made us seriously wonder if it would ever be returned. We urgently needed our money back to book somewhere else to sleep after the long drive. Instead, he held on to it, leaving us stressed and worried about our comfort and safety. He wouldn’t accommodate us despite knowing we couldn’t arrive before check-in closed, wouldn’t cancel right after the booking, and was rude and dismissive on the phone. We’re filing a formal complaint with Booking.com and strongly warn others to be cautious. In response to the owner: We didn’t stay because you wouldn’t let us check in. We booked and paid, then you told us the check-in cutoff was earlier than our arrival time. We asked you to cancel and refund us, only minutes after booking, but you said you wouldn’t wait for us and wouldn’t return the money. You also ignored our calls when we tried to understand why you wouldn’t refund us if we couldn’t stay, and only picked up when we called from another number. You said you didn’t want to refund us. This is a pure scam.
