We come back every year and spend three months at a time, and have done so for the last five years. The lunch here is terrific, with excellent choices, sensational bread, great wines, and cheerful, very professional service. One small point about the tip machine: Australians rarely tip, and when we do, it's in cash. You can go a long time, maybe your whole stay, paying by card only. In all our trips we've encountered a tip machine just twice, in Naples and Florence, no surprise there. I can see the servers like it, but it feels awkward for us. Tipping is part of life for Americans, but hospitality workers here are paid well.

The views and wine pairing were every bit as good as the meal and service. We celebrated a special occasion at Fattoria Sardi, where we chose the set menu for everyone. It felt like a rare combination: beautiful and refined, but still relaxed and down to earth. Probably the best food experience around Lucca. We’d love to come back.

We’ve had lunch here a couple of times, and each visit turns into a whole afternoon in a lovely setting. It’s a small biodynamic winery, and the food is incredible alongside the wines. The staff are some of the kindest people, too.

We came away knowing a lot more about wine, and with a really lovely memory of the visit. Matteo was a pleasant, inspiring guide who knew his stuff. The tour took us through the wine fields and production site before ending in the modern tasting room, where we tried five wines. Every one was elegant and interesting. Thanks to Matteo and Fattoria Sardi.

Our apartment looked out over the vineyards, in a beautiful spot a short drive from Lucca. It was comfortable, spacious enough, and had everything we needed for daily life. We were welcomed warmly, got the practical information straight away, and received quick answers whenever we had a question. The wine tasting included a walk through the vineyards and taught us about local wines and how they’re made. We also took a private cooking class. Both activities felt personal and were run with real enthusiasm and a lot of fun. We had an amazing stay and would happily recommend it.
