For dessert, we all shared a generous slice of blueberry cake, after a meal that began with Russian salad and continued with a large plate of rough-cut gnocchi in meat sauce, then grilled trout. The Ruchè was a splendid, little-known Piedmontese wine to wash it all down. Borgo Antico overlooks a pretty square in attractive Magnano, in the foothills of the Italian Alps. Elisa cooks and Stefano serves in a cozy room above the bar, up a flight of stone stairs. The cooking is straightforward and home-style, and the service was efficient and very friendly. We were there with our Italian hosts Antonia and Carlo, my wife Paloma, and me. Highly recommended.

The bar is a nice gathering spot for locals, tourists, and pilgrims. You can stop in for an aperitivo or try the tasty local IPA lager. It’s in Magnano, on Bessa Hill near Biella, close to the Bose religious center. The village is a quiet place among the woods of Bessa.

We had a lovely dinner spot along the Cammino di Oropa. The food was amazing, proper home cooking, and the local beer was really tasty.
