Antica Locanda dei Mercanti

The lift is tiny and you have to climb half a flight of stairs to reach it. Aside from that, this was a truly lovely hotel, with a great room, good food, excellent staff, and a very convenient location.

The reception ladies were cheerful and kind. The one who checked us in and out suggested places to visit and eat, and even called a taxi for our trip to the train station. The room was small but just right for two, and we loved the flower-filled little patio and the creative paintwork on the walls and ceiling. We could hear that the walls might be thin, but it didn't cause us any trouble. It's tucked away, though close to the Duomo, Castello, and Brera's shops and restaurants. We loved staying here. If you like a hotel with its own character instead of a chain style, this place is a great fit. 10/10 recommend!

Finding the hotel was a little tricky, but that ended up being part of its charm. You go through a small door inside a larger one, into a huge entry hall with stairs and a tiny, one-person lift. It felt like a cute Alice in Wonderland sort of adventure. I was unsure after reading some reviews, but my room was lovely, simple and clean, with a big terrace full of flowers and twinkly lights. We had to leave very early, so the lovely concierge gave us warm slices of apple bread pudding, which were delicious. I'll be back!

We spent seven days here, and the stay made our time in Milan really memorable. Our room had a beautiful terrace where we could have wine and watch a movie after exploring the city. The staff were excellent. A must stay if you're going to Milan!
