Castel Pietraio

We didn’t know what to expect when we chose to come, but the peace and slow pace of life in Castelo are something special. You’re living close to nature, and it wakes up all your senses. The hosts are great, kind and very helpful. They make their own organic wine and oil, so don’t miss the chance to take a tour and taste the wine.

Caterina made our stay even better. She was a wonderful, welcoming and informative host. The location is great for exploring Tuscany, and Monteriggioni, with several good dinner options, is only 10 minutes away. Breakfast was good and plentiful, and we had dinner there one evening, which was good too. Our apartment was a little dated, but the antique furniture suited the castle’s history. The rooms in the main building are more modern while still keeping that castle feel.

The old castle and its setting are lovely, though it’s a shame the rooms are in a separate building. I find this hard to write given what other reviews say, but the room was extremely basic. There was no tea or coffee, kettle or even a drinking glass, just a mini fridge with two bottles of water. The bathroom basin had very little cold water, and there was barely any shower soap. Breakfast was continental, but the coffee machine didn’t last through the sitting, and neither did the two-slice toaster. It’s disappointing to write this about such a lovely property, especially as there are many other places that are equal or better. Most guests seemed to be at the supermarket 6km away buying basic supplies. I’m sure the owner will respond that some details here are inaccurate, but for me this was deeply underwhelming accommodation. Still, experiences like this are part of what makes travel memorable.

A great stop on our bikepacking trip. There was a secure place to keep the bike, and the room was clean and spacious with a great shower. Breakfast was excellent.
