Porta San Gennaro

Napoli was new to us, and this B&B made a great base. Everything was really clean, the decor was lovely, and breakfast was good. Daria was so welcoming, friendly, and helpful. Getting around was easy too, with Museo/Cavour the nearest station and only a few stops to Napoli centrale, where trains go to Pompei, Vesuvio, the Airport, Salerno, Capri, and more. Such a great getaway, huge thanks to Daria 🙏

We had a lovely stay at this B&B. The rooms were spacious and clean, breakfast was nice, and our host was kind. They also let us leave our bags on the last day while we waited to head to the airport.

A calm, very clean B&B with lovely hosts. It's a new place, and most Naples sights are close enough to reach on foot. Definitely recommend it!

Porta San Gennaro is one of the old city gates just off Via Foria. There's a little chapel inside, along with a fresco by Mattia Preti. A nearby caption explains that this is the sole surviving one of the seven frescoes Mattia Preti was commissioned to paint as a votive offering after escaping the plague of 1656. The gate is Naples' oldest entrance, mentioned in documents from 928 A.D., and later incorporated into the sixteenth-century wall built under viceroy Pedro da Toledo. The fresco shows the Immaculate Virgin holding the Child, with San Gennaro, San Francesio Saverio, and Santa Rosalia pleading for the disease to end. In 2021, Friends of Naples and AReN, working with public bodies and private donors, offered to restore it for the city. That restoration has left the gate in better shape than many old sites around Naples, and it's worth stopping by. The pizza place next door is worth a try too!
