Via Duomo stretches for 1,200 meters and is sometimes called the “Via dei Musei” because so many monumental complexes line it. Its roots go back to Greco-Roman times, when it was laid out as a cardo maior, the ancient city’s north-south thoroughfare. In the second half of the 19th century, it was widened and straightened to connect the old city center with the port. The street takes its name from the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, or the Duomo, which holds the relics and Treasure of San Gennaro. Today it brings together a remarkable range of culture: besides the Duomo, historic buildings house the Filangieri Museum, the Girolamini Complex, and the Diocesan Museum, with the nearby Donnaregina Museum of Contemporary Art (MADRE) adding contemporary culture alongside archaeology and Neapolitan Baroque.
Tourists fill this historic street, which is loved by so many. The cathedral is one of a kind, and you can also go inside the Chapel of San Gennaro to see its treasures.
The Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta on Via Duomo is Naples’ main place of worship. This imposing complex mixes Gothic and Baroque architecture with older structures such as the Basilica of Santa Restituta. Inside, the Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro preserves the blood of the patron saint.
Warm and welcoming... the lights with historical themes are special! Well done.
The road has been left in total decay and is poorly maintained.
