I had a quiet, relaxing stay during the low season, with hardly any other guests around. From my room, the fields and Perugia made for a spectacular view, and the castle terrace was lovely too. The restaurant food was excellent, though breakfast was quite simple. The castle itself is small and well kept, about 15 minutes from Perugia, and easy to reach by car or bus.

We stayed in Giota, a pleasant room with a little patio beside the building, near the pool and garden. The gardens are beautifully landscaped and a pleasure to wander through, and there’s parking on site. It’s a short drive to Perugia and a longer one to Assisi. The castle has been restored nicely, with lovely views both up toward Perugia and down over the Tuscan Valley. Go up to the roof for the tower views, or have an apertivo in the courtyard, sit by the poo, or eat at the restaurant and enjoy the same scenery. Breakfast was included and delicious.

Finding your way through all the castle’s twists and turns is part of the fun, and there is an elevator. The rooms were clean and updated, with very nice bathrooms, and we were pleasantly surprised by how beautiful the castle was. It may be a difficult place to get around in a wheelchair.

The breakfast patio has stunning views, and breakfast itself had lots of choice, including fresh baked goods, fruit, and good coffee. The breakfast staff were kind and attentive. We didn’t eat dinner there. This old castle in the hills of Perugia feels magical, with the original hallways and unusual castle details still in place. Our room was pretty, though compact. A real treasure for a quiet getaway.

We were there as part of an extension to a Viking cruise. On the final day, all 14 of us stood up to give the chef an ovation. What a striking venue.
