Hotel Garnì Pegrà

We loved Ponte di Legno and were very happy with Hotel Garni Pegra. It’s really well placed for the village and skiing: only a short walk to the chairlift for the Ponte di Legno runs and the gondola to the Passo Tonale ski area. The hotel is well fitted out, and the efficient lift goes to all floors, including the large ski and boot store at -1. We didn’t see a better-located hotel in P di L, and are seriously considering booking the same place next year. Our room had a balcony overlooking the passing gondola and spectacular mountains. Heating only came on for a few hours a day, but that suited us, and I can understand having standard settings rather than letting guests turn every thermostat all the way up. The shower room was fine, with good water temperature and pressure. We didn’t need room service, but the staff seemed hardworking and very pleasant. Reception was great too. The manager helped us order a taxi to Milan when our scheduled transfer was late. We didn’t have breakfast at the hotel, though what we saw in the dining room looked fine. We did have a pasta meal there when we arrived, which was convenient. There are also some very good, reasonably priced restaurants within easy walking distance. The one nuisance in the last few days was a loud guest next door who spent a lot of time talking loudly on the phone. The building is well constructed, but sound insulation isn’t great, and that must be difficult and expensive to fix now. Some past complaints may have been justified, while others seemed unreasonable.

We were there for eight days, staying room only, which suited us well. The room was spacious, had plenty of storage, a very comfortable bed, and an amazing view. It’s under a ten-minute walk to the centre of Ponte and five minutes to the lifts, so very convenient. The receptionist when we arrived couldn’t have been more welcoming or helpful. I’d read some earlier reviews and wondered if we had the wrong hotel. The only minor issue was the lack of soundproofing. We could clearly hear every word in Italian from the next room when the guest was on the phone. Otherwise, we enjoyed it so much that we may come back next year.

The valley’s culture didn’t feel as customer-oriented as in other places or cities, but the staff here were super. Irene at the desk was very professional, and Mary was always rushing around to put on a nice breakfast. I don’t know the name of our cleaner, but our room was consistently clean and warm. Just enjoy nature and go skiing!

The surroundings are beautiful, and we had a nice view from our balcony overlooking the cable car. But we’ve never had such an unfriendly, unprofessional welcome. The manager was the most unprofessional person I’ve ever encountered working in a hotel, and our interaction with her sadly spoiled part of our stay.
