On our last night in Rome, after two weeks celebrating our 15th anniversary across Florence, Ischia, Matera, Calabria and Rome, I went up to the fourth-floor restaurant for ice like I had the previous two nights. Marc, a waiter, bluntly told me to ask reception downstairs. When I said I’d been given ice there before, he went into the kitchen. Another waiter then offered to help and came back with a small bucket, with Marc behind him. I asked Marc his name three times before he finally told me. It was a disappointing way to end our vacation over something so small. The other waiter was happy to help, but Marc’s response was completely lacking in hospitality. I hope his manager sees this.

The room was noisy at any hour if you opened the window, with cars, scooters and people outside. Getting to the room when the restaurant opened was a hassle too, with a big queue for the elevator and guests having to wait or take the stairs while people with reservations tried to get in. The shower ran out of hot water after about three minutes, and the hair dryer didn’t work. I asked for a replacement, but it never arrived. The restaurant was very expensive and the food only average, while the free breakfast felt like an afterthought. I won’t stay here again.

The rooftop bar was nice, and the location was great. But this was the most expensive hotel of our two-week Italy trip, and the one place I wouldn’t return to. We stayed in another Rome hotel at the start of the trip that was much nicer, less expensive, and just as well located. There are better and cheaper options in the city, especially if comfort and decor matter to you. This is an old property, and its character is part of the appeal, but it felt shabby. Our room was plain and drab, though the bathroom was nice. The bed was perhaps the most uncomfortable I’ve had in a hotel. You can’t change the room size, but the bedding could be more comfortable. The hotel advertises itself as five star, but to me it felt three star at best. This was the only disappointment on our trip. It didn’t affect the rest of the vacation, but the stay wasn’t what was advertised or what we paid for.

The team deserves five stars, especially Dragos at reception. He made us feel at home, was welcoming and very helpful, and speaks several languages, including English, so it was easy to communicate. Our room was spacious, with excellent beds and bathroom amenities. The hotel sits right on Piazza Navona, making the main sights easy to reach on foot. We’ve just come home from a wonderful 10-day stay at Eitch Borromini, and highly recommend it.

Our room felt like a peaceful retreat after long days out: new, thoughtfully designed, comfortable and surprisingly spacious for such a historic setting. The staff also made everything easy, from restaurant and drink suggestions to handling reservations and keeping us updated about changes. They were attentive and genuinely thoughtful throughout. Eitch Borromini is right on Piazza Navona, one of Rome’s most beautiful squares, with restaurants all around and everything walkable. Being attached to a stunning cathedral added to the feeling of staying in historic Rome while still having modern comforts. It was the perfect base for our time here, and we’ll stay here again on our next Rome trip.
